At one time, Fairbury had at least five coal mines. The only remaining evidence of these coal mines is Shaft Hill on the north side of the railroad tracks between 9th and 10th streets. If you are standing on Walnut Street near Popejoy Plumbing, you can see the small hill of slag material that still remains.
